Kia stoppt wegen Streiks Produktion in größtem Werk

Seoul (AP) Der südkoreanische Autokonzern Kia hat wegen eines Streiks von Vertragsarbeitern die Produktion in seinem größten Werk gestoppt. In dem Werk in Hwaseong nahe Seoul entstehen 42 Prozent aller Kia-Fahrzeuge. Die Vertragsarbeiter sind keine regulären Mitglieder der Gewerkschaften. Diese hatten nach wiederholten Streiks in der vergangenen Woche einer Lohnerhöhung von 5,2 Prozent zugestimmt. Kia ist eine Tochter von Hyundai Motor, dem sechstgrößten Autobauer der Welt. Die Arbeitnehmervertreter bei Hyundai lehnten am Freitag eine angebotene Lohnerhöhung von 5,4 Prozent ab, so dass auch dort Streiks drohen. © AP


Kia car workers end strike action

Workers at South Korean carmaker Kia have ended a two-week series of strikes, four days after colleagues at Hyundai ended similar stoppages.

They agreed to resume normal working after accepting a 6.9% pay increase, the same as their Hyundai counterparts.

They also secured better conditions including changes in the shift system, union and company officials said.

Workers at Hyundai and Kia, both part of Hyundai Motor Group, had repeatedly downed tools for lengthy periods.

The two companies control more than 70% of the South Korean car market.

The other major Korean manufacturer, Daewoo Motors, was acquired by the US car giant GM last year.
